Frequently asked questions

What makes the Private Hunter Valley Wine Tour different to the public tour?
The private version is fully tailored to your group. You choose your group size, departure time and ideal balance of cellar doors, food experiences and pacing. The public Hunter Valley Wine Tour has a fixed itinerary, set 8am to 9am pickup and a small-group cap of 11 guests. Private tours are ideal for milestone occasions, corporate days, hens or bucks weekends, family celebrations and groups who want full flexibility.

How long is the tour?
8 to 10 hours total, depending on your chosen pace and itinerary. We pick up between 8am and 9am from your Newcastle address and return around 5pm.

What’s the price per person?
Pricing for private tours is on a sliding scale based on group size. Smaller groups see a higher per-person rate, larger groups see better value per head. Get in touch with your dates and group size and we’ll send a quote. We can accommodate everything from intimate couples through to larger groups on request.

Do I need to be 18 to come on this tour?
Yes. This is an 18+ tour due to the cellar door wine tastings. For wine-curious families travelling with younger children, our Country NSW Day Tour is an alternative that welcomes children.

Can we choose which cellar doors to visit?
Yes. That’s the point of going private. We’ll talk through your group’s preferences (Semillon focus, sparkling, boutique vs established names, food pairings) and build an itinerary that delivers what you actually want from the day. Our regular partner venues include Audrey Wilkinson, Mount Pleasant, Hungerford Hill, Saltire Estate, Bonvilla Estate, Jac & Jones, Hunter Wine Lab, Small Mouth Vodka and Binnorie Dairy, with other options available based on group preferences.

Is lunch included?
No, lunch is at your own cost. We typically stop at 4 Pines at The Farm for a relaxed à la carte meal overlooking the vines, but we can suggest other lunch venues based on your group’s preferences.

Where do you pick up from in Newcastle?
We pick up from your Newcastle address (hotel, Airbnb or private residence) across Newcastle East, Newcastle West, Merewether and nearby suburbs. Tell us your address when booking and we’ll confirm. Pickup is also available from Hunter Valley accommodations on request.

What’s the dress code?
Dressy casual. Cellar doors prefer no thongs, ripped clothing, costumes or singlets (for men). Closed shoes are recommended for walking through the vineyards. A light jacket is handy in cooler months.

History of the Hunter Valley

The winding roads of Hunter Valley Wine Country hold centuries of stories just waiting to be uncorked. This tale begins in 1832 when a Scottish gentleman named James Busby arrived on Aussie shores armed with an eclectic collection of 500 European vine cuttings. With sister Catherine in tow, Busby secured a land grant and wasted no time planting those precious vines near present-day Morpeth.

By 1840 vineyards flourished across over 500 acres of Hunter Valley, and an intrepid doctor named Henry Lindeman was crafting exceptional wines that caught the attention of pioneering families like the Draytons, Tullochs, Tyrrells and Wilkinsons. Together through the mid to late 1800s they cultivated a world-class wine region.

Nearly 200 years later, Hunter Valley’s pioneering spirit lives on through skilled viticulturists and boundary-pushing winemakers unafraid to achieve richly authentic wines vintage after vintage. A growing number of estates still produce sublime wines from those original 1840s vines - extremely rare pre-phylloxera survivors. You can taste history firsthand with old vine Hunter Valley Shiraz, Semillon and Chardonnay.

The more you explore Hunter Valley wines, the deeper your appreciation for this legacy of great Australian winemaking. So grab a glass and uncork the captivating stories of Hunter Valley Wine Country.
