The Majestic Humpback Whale Migration in Port Stephens.

The Majestic Humpback Whale Migration in Port Stephens.

Each winter, the coast off Port Stephens becomes one of the best spots in Australia to watch humpback whales. The whales travel roughly 5,000 kilometres each way between their feeding grounds in Antarctica and the warm breeding waters off Queensland, and they pass right by Port Stephens between June and November. Our Port Stephens Winter Adventure is built around the migration so you can see it without having to organise the day yourself.

Why the whales come this way

Humpbacks feed in Antarctic waters through the southern summer, building up reserves on krill and small fish. As the water cools, they head north along the east Australian coast to mate and give birth in warmer water before returning south with their calves. Port Stephens, with its sheltered bays and clear water, is one of the closest viewing points to the migration route on the east coast.

Why Port Stephens for whale watching

Port Stephens has multiple ways to see whales: clifftop lookouts, coastal walks and dedicated boat cruises. The protected harbour means cruise conditions are usually calm, and skippers know exactly where to look. Sightings of breaches, tail slaps and pod activity are common through peak season, and you’ll often spot dolphins, seals and sea birds on the same trip.

What our day tour includes

The Winter Adventure is a full day from Newcastle. You’ll get door to door pickup from your accommodation, a guided drive up the coast, a hike up Mount Tomaree for one of the best coastal views in NSW, a relaxed lunch at the Newcastle and Port Stephens Game Fishing Club in Shoal Bay, the whale watch cruise, and a stop at the Stockton Sand Dunes on the way home. A local guide is with you for the entire day.

When to book

The Winter Adventure runs through whale season, roughly June to November. Peak migration is mid winter and again in spring as the calves head south, so any time across the season can be excellent. Smaller boats and limited departure days mean these tours sell out, especially on weekends.
