The Allyn River

The Upper Allyn presents a rare opportunity to experience a diversity of natural environments.

Nestled in the foothills of the Barrington Tops State Forests, Chichester State Forest borders the pristine Allyn River and offers stunning rainforest scenery. The forest is divided into two areas: the western side follows the Allyn River while the eastern side follows the Telegherry River. From the north, visitors can access the Allyn River sites via Dungog or Gresford, a two hour drive from Newcastle or 3.5 hours from Sydney. However, the road crosses several causeways that flood during heavy rains. The regrowth forests seen today result from over 150 years of timber harvesting. Yet current practices promote biodiversity, soil and water quality, cultural heritage, and sustainable timber production. The Allyn River flows through World Heritage listed rainforests, home to Antarctic Beech, Red Cedar, Small Leaf Fig, and towering 50-meter River Oaks.

The Allyn River valley is the traditional territory of the Gringai clan of the Wonnarua people, a group of Indigenous Australians. Both the Paterson and Allyn Rivers originate in protected areas, although algal growth in the Lostock Dam can impact downstream water quality. Dairying, beef cattle, and poultry farming represent the major agricultural industries.

Allyn River: Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the Allyn River from Newcastle?
Around 2 hours’ drive north-west via Dungog or Gresford. From Sydney it’s about 3.5 hours. The drive crosses several causeways that can flood after heavy rain, so check road conditions in wet weather.

What is there to do at the Allyn River?
Swimming holes, picnic areas, rainforest walks, and camping at the Allyn River campground. The area sits inside the Chichester State Forest, with World Heritage rainforests featuring Antarctic Beech, Red Cedar, and 50-metre River Oaks.

Is the Allyn River good for swimming?
Yes — the river has several deep, clear swimming holes that are popular in summer. The Ladies Well and the section near the campground are the most-visited spots. Always check water depth and current before swimming.

Can you camp at the Allyn River?
Yes, the Allyn River campground inside Chichester State Forest is run by NSW Forestry. It’s a basic campground (no powered sites) but has toilets and is right beside the river. Book ahead in summer and during school holidays.

What’s the difference between the Allyn River and the Hunter Valley?
The Allyn River is a forested river valley about an hour north of the Hunter Valley wine region. They’re different ecosystems — the Hunter is rolling vineyard country, while the Allyn is dense rainforest and swimming holes. Both sit within Wonnarua country.

Does Newy Tour Co run tours to the Allyn River?
Not as a regular departure — the Allyn is best visited as a day-trip drive or overnight camp. We can include it in a custom private tour for groups specifically interested in rainforest and swimming holes.
